Onset/Rime
Beginning Sounds
This is a formal assessment used to determine if students can identify the beginning sounds of words. The target ages are five to eight and the time required is ten to fifteen minutes. The teacher will point to the picture and ask the student to say the beginning sound aloud. The student could also complete the assessment on their own by identifying and writing the beginning sound for each picture.

Onset/rime assessment
This is an informal assessment used to determine if students can identify a word based on onset and rime. The target ages are five to eight and the time required is five minutes. The teacher will sound out the word and then ask the student to identify the word and say the word orally. The teacher will record student answers on the assessment sheet and place a plus sign (+) next to correct answers and a minus sign (-) next to incorrect answers.
