Fluency
Fluency is the ability to read text with accuracy and good expression at the appropriate rate, while also understanding the meaning of the text. Fluency is a skill that should be mastered because instead of focusing on decoding words, the students will be able to focus on understanding the meaning of the text. |
Reading Fluency Assessment
This is a formal assessment used to determine student mastery of fluency. The target ages are five to eleven and the time required is fifteen to twenty minutes. It is to be administered orally to each student. The assessment contains reading passages and teacher assessment sheets. The teacher will ask the student to read one passage, time their answers, and record incorrect reading on the data sheet.
- Target Ages: 5-11
- Time Required: 15 to 20 min.

Reading Fluency Passage
This is a formal assessment used to determine student mastery of fluency. The target ages are five to eight and the time required is ten to fifteen minutes. It is administered orally to each student. The assessment contains a reading passage for the student to read aloud. The student will read the passage aloud and the teacher will time the students on how long it takes them to complete it.
